The snake chain, also called a serpentine chain, is recognizable by its smooth, continuous surface that ripples like a snake's skin. Discover our collection of snake weave chains for men and women, in gold-tone or silver-tone finishes, from ultra-fine 1 mm to the more substantial 3 mm.

What is a snake chain?

The snake weave has no visible links: small curved metal plates fit tightly together to form a flexible, smooth tube. The result resembles scales, with a consistent shine flowing along the neck. A chain is called serpentine when the weave is round, and a flat snake weave when it is flattened, like a small ribbon.

Round, square, or flat serpentine

  • Round serpentine: the most classic, a perfectly round and smooth tube, elegant and discreet.
  • Square serpentine: a four-sided section that catches more light, for a more graphic effect.
  • Flat snake weave: a flattened chain, similar to a metal ribbon, that follows the base of the neck.

Gold or silver snake chain

Looking for a gold snake chain? Our designs are available in a gold-tone finish, warm and luminous, and a silver-tone finish for a more modern silver snake chain. Each width is available in both colors. The exact material of each design is listed on its product page.

Snake chain for men or women

The snake chain is unisex. A women's snake chain is worn in a fine 1 to 2 mm width, on its own, with a small pendant, or layered with other necklaces. A men's snake chain is generally chosen in 2 to 3 mm, for a clean, understated line, ideal with an open shirt or a T-shirt.

Which width should you choose?

Width Appearance Ideal for
1 mm Ultra-fine and delicate Women, small pendants, layering
2 mm The perfect balance Unisex wear, everyday use, worn alone
3 mm More substantial Men, a clean and clearly visible line

Which length should you choose?

Length Where the chain falls
40 to 45 cm At the base of the neck, choker effect
50 cm On the collarbone: the most common choice
55 to 60 cm On the upper chest, ideal for layering

Snake chain and pendant

Thanks to its smooth surface, the snake chain highlights a pendant without overshadowing it. Choose a lightweight pendant and a bail wide enough to slide along the chain. For heavier pendants, such as a set medallion, choose a more robust twisted chain or Cuban chain.

How to wear a snake chain

Worn alone, the serpentine chain adds a minimalist and elegant touch. It layers very well with a Figaro chain or a longer rope chain: the contrast between the smooth surface and a textured weave creates a modern look. Mix gold-tone and silver-tone finishes for a more contemporary appearance.

Snake weave care

The snake weave is flexible but does not like being bent: do not knot it or wrap it tightly, as this could mark the weave. Store it flat or hanging. Remove it before showering, exercising, or swimming, avoid perfume, and clean it with a soft, dry cloth, following the direction of the chain.

Snake chain FAQ

What is the difference between a snake chain and a serpentine chain?

None: both names refer to the same smooth weave, made of small interlocking plates. Serpentine is often used for the round version.

Is a snake chain suitable for men?

Yes. In 2 to 3 mm, a men's snake chain offers a clean, understated line that is easy to wear every day.

Can you wear a pendant on a snake chain?

Yes, with a lightweight pendant and a bail wide enough. For a heavy pendant, choose a more robust weave.

How can you prevent a snake chain from being damaged?

Do not bend or knot it, and store it flat. The snake weave retains its shape as long as it is not twisted.

Which snake chain length should you choose?

50 cm is the most common length. Choose 40 to 45 cm for a choker effect, or 55 to 60 cm for layering.
